December at the MassMutual Center: A Quick Look
Something happens to Western Mass in December. The city gets brighter, the sidewalks get busier, and suddenly downtown Springfield feels like it’s in motion — families, fans, college students, alumni, planners, and visitors all crossing paths on their way to something memorable.
At the center of all of it? The MassMutual Center.
December is when our building becomes less of a venue and more of a gathering place. One weekend you’ll see college hoops taking over the arena for the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, reminding everyone that yes — basketball really was born right here. The next weekend, the Harlem Globetrotters roll in and somehow bridge three generations at once. Even people who “aren’t a sports family” show up for that one.
Meanwhile, the Convention Center fills with the glow of the Festival of Trees, the kind of Western Mass tradition that brings everyone from school groups to grandparents through the doors. And as soon as Santa finishes his pancakes, families flood in for Breakfast with Santa, proving that holiday magic still works before noon.

By the end of the month, downtown is buzzing again as thousands ring in the new year with the Springfield Thunderbirds — the loudest and most fun New Year’s Eve tradition in Western Mass.
What makes all of this special isn’t just the events. It’s what they do for the city.
They fill restaurants. They pack hotels. They introduce first-time visitors to Springfield. They give locals something to look forward to. They make Western Mass feel connected.
December reminds us that a venue can be more than a venue. It can be a spark, a meeting place, a reason for people to come downtown — and come together.
Here’s to a bright December in Western Mass. We’ll see you at the MassMutual Center. ✨
